Abstract
A thermodynamic analysis (based on an entropy cycle) of the efficiency and the operating desiderata of chemical lasers is presented. Central to the approach is the concept of the entropy deficiency of the chemical reaction used to drive the laser. The thermodynamic threshold conditions for lasing at any vibrotational transition are derived and the variation of the pumping efficiency with the concentrations is established.
