Abstract
A thermodynamic operating condition for lasing (in the presence of losses) is derived. This provides a lower bound for the required density of systems in the emitting level. Efficient cooling enables one to reduce this bound. The results are shown to be a particular application of the thermodynamic limitations on heating of refrigeration achieved via luminescence.
