Abstract

This conference abstract summarizes research proposing the theoretical framework that threat plays a key role as an antecedent of religious freedom. Drawing on intergroup relations literature, the authors identify perceived threat from out-groups as the main source of religious regulation and legislation, and discrimination against religious minorities.
