Abstract
This chapter explores the roots and evolution of time geography in relation to tourism geographies, tracing its origins to Torsten Hgerstrand and the Lund School. Time geography is examined both as a theory elucidating human activity in time and space and as a powerful visualisation technique. The chapter discusses the various adaptations of time geography in tourism research since the 1990s and the impact of the time-space data revolution, particularly in the 2000s, highlighting the acquisition of high-resolution time-space data through tracking technologies such as GPS and the advent of Sequence Alignment Methods (SAM) in the social sciences. The chapter also addresses limitations and criticisms surrounding the implementation of time geography in tourism studies while underscoring its potential in advancing the field, for example via emerging approaches based on phygitality in time geography research on tourism contexts.
