Abstract

The sudden appearance and worldwide dissemination of AIDS raises complex and as yet unexplored problems for the tourist industry. These are considered in a case study of Thailand, an important sex- tourism destination. The dilemma facing the authorities of protecting tourism by downplaying the threat of AIDS vs. protecting public health by acknowledging it, is examined. The changes in policies toward AIDS, and in the public attitudes to foreigners and tourists, in the wake of an AIDS scare, are traced. Problems of protection of the sex-workers, both female and male, from infection are discussed. Changes in national tourism policies are indicated, and some general conclusions regarding the interface of tourism and AIDS are proposed.
