Abstract

Saturated aldehydes and ketones were shown to undergo transfer hydrogenation by sodium formate under phase transfer conditions in the presence of Aliquat-336. While RuCl2(PPh3)3 was found to be the best catalyst for aldehyde reduction, a 1:10 mixture of RhCl(PPh3)3 and PPh3 showed the highest activity in the transformation of ketones.
