T1 - Trends of sediment removal from arid scree slopes under simulated rainstorm experiments

N2 - In the framework of an experiment devoted to the study of runoff generation on six arid talus mantled slopes, runoff samples loaded with fine sediment were taken at short intervals. These samples allowed an analysis to be made of the relationships existing between sediment concentration and sediment discharge to the runoff discharge of such slopes. Sediment concentrations varied from 0.5 to 59 g/1., and sediment yields from 0.9 to 24.2 g/m2 Whereas a positive linear relationship was obtained between runoff discharge and sediment discharge, no clear relationship was obtained between runoff discharge and sediment concentration. The highest concentrations were recorded in the initial runoff, followed by a rapid decrease in concentration during the rising flow stage. A second peak of sediment concentration appeared at the fall stage of the flow. These results are tentatively explained by the varying role of splash and flow velocity on sediment detachment and transport processes during the flow event.
