Abstract

Effects connected with the Coulomb blockade in single normal tunnel junction are analyzed. The analysis allows an estimate of the tunneling time without contradicting the uncertainty principle, and explains the main features of the I-V characteristics without much mathematics. An estimate of the effective capacitance Ceff based on the tunnel current distribution and electric potential distribution within the electrodes is obtained which is in good agreement with experiment data.
