Abstract

Lat. coep- and Gk. βαλ- served both at some stage of the language as phasal verbs of inception, alongside other lexical and grammatical roles. Tracing the timelines of both verbs' lives, disparate in scope and differing widely in their class affiliation and in the extent and duration of their functionalization, uncovers the points of similarity and - mainly - dissimilarity in the status of these terms as fully lexical verbs and as function verbs.
