Abstract
This chapter focuses on the role of unofficial, unusual, “outside-the-system” actors in peacemaking and peacebuilding, exploring various questions and aspects regarding this growing phenomenon. It begins with a theoretical, conceptual discussion of these actors, their activities, and their resources. This is followed by an analysis of the main prototypes, exploring the opportunities and challenges that each type represents and offering illustrations from different conflicts. The chapter ends with an analysis of the scholarly and public debates on the phenomenon, followed by conclusions.
