Abstract

Primary angiitis of the central nervous system is an inflammatory disorder of the intracranial vasculature with distinctive pathological findings. Although the etiology is unknown, the histopathological features and response to immunosuppressive treatment suggest that immune-mediated mechanisms are important. It is unclear whether the vasculitic process is triggered by exposure to an environmental factor, such as an infection, or by changes within the host, such as aberrant peptide deposition within the vessel wall. The identification of the processes that initiate the vasculitic process and their correlation with pathological findings is crucial to understanding the pathogenesis of this disorder and designing more effective therapies.
