Abstract

This text analyzes the work of authors, directors and theoreticians who deliberately choose to perform their works secretly. Clandestine theater is a central theme in the theoretical writings of Genet, as well as in his plays. Likewise, Grotowski aims towards a form of secret theater, hidden from the wide public. On purpose. Aktion (Marseilles, 1996) was shown once to an audience of fifteen people who had been informed of the place and time of the event in the morning, a few hours only before the performance itself. Following in the pathways of Grotowski, Doudou Maïan, an Israeli director, hides his work and shows it, secretly, to a small number of privileged «witnesses» (Inti Ana, Jerusalem, 2000). In a world overwhelmed by theatricality (politics, commercials, news, TV films) these secret performances seek to rediscover the lost magic of the theater.
