Abstract

Von Neumann argued by means of a thought experiment involving measurements of spin observables that the quantum mechanical quantity SVN = -kTr(ρlogρ) is conceptually equivalent to thermodynamic entropy. We analyze Von Neumann's thought experiment and show that his argument fails.
