Women Leaders in the Ancient Synagogue Revisited: Some more Philological-Historical Observations

Abstract

After 40 years, this article revisits Bernadette Brooten's classic Women Leaders in the Ancient Synagogue. Tal Ilan reviews some of what has been written on this book over the years and then produces an addendum, with 10 additional inscriptions to Brooten's 19, recording either newly published, or older reread inscriptions, recording titled Jewish women. The titles and women are analyzed according to Brooten's methodology, either to support her conclusions or to slightly nuance them. It also reviews two texts from Qumran that refer to such titled women. Tal Ilan argues that Brooten's book cannot be replaced, but only supplemented, in order to produce a more coherent picture of this historical phenomenon.
