Abstract

Fifteen Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups of 3 and were fed for 2 weeks with the following experimental diets: control group - standard diet (LSM); SOY diet, diet supplemented with 15 mg/day of dietary lectin extracts for the first week and 5 mg/day freeze-dried soyabean extract for the second week; evening primrose (EPM), 15 and 5 mg/day extracts of primrose meal (cake); EPS, 15 and 5 mg/day extracts of full-oil primrose seeds; and PEA, 10 mg/day pea extract on the first week only. In previous experiments, dietary legumes decreased selenium concentration in the liver. Dietary lectin extract (SOY) did not affect selenium level. These results indicate that lower Se bioavailability was caused by other biologically active substances. However, extracts of EPM but not EPS extracts can reduce the liver Se content.
