Abstract

This study describes an averaging technique whereby cochlear action potentials may be recorded with extracochlear electrodes in humans. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the recording of cochlear action potentials from extracochlear sources in humans. Their small amplitude makes averaging techniques necessary in order to increase the signal to noise ratio. Various control procedures showed that the responses were not electrical or microphonic artefacts.
